Q.
Do you do house calls or do I have to take my clocks
somewhere? Repairs are carried out in your home or in
our workshop.
We
do house calls on Grandfather clocks within most of the state of Florida, Delaware, Philadelphia,
South Jersey and Cecil
County, Maryland.
Please contact us for estimates and to be placed on our
schedule.
Q. How often should my clock be serviced? We
recommend oiling once a year.
Clock oil is essential for keeping your clock in good
working order! Q.
Can I service it myself? No,
because the movement has to be removed from the case to do it
correctly. An experienced professional should
oil the clock so oil is applied in the correct places in the
correct amounts. Over-oiling will cause the clock to need
overhauling again sooner. Oiling the wrong places could cause
excessive wear. Previous
repair work by unskilled personnel causes more work for us and
will increase the repair bill.
If your clock stops running
smoothly it is in your best interest to contact a professional
immediately, and get the clock fixed right the first time. Q.
What about cleaning? Removing
dirt does not repair wear. Over
time as dust gets in the clock mechanism, the oil becomes an
abrasive paste, which causes wear. The longer the clock runs in
this condition, the more repairs it will need. Q. How should a grandfather clock be properly serviced? With only a few exceptions, all movements (the working part of the clock) should be taken completely out of the case and the dial (face) of the clock removed so it can be properly oiled. If someone tries to oil it just from the openings on the side of the clock, it is almost impossible to get to the pivot holes and levers that are behind the dial (face). If a service man does this, show him to the door because they are only oiling half the clock and paying for that is a waste of your money. Q.
